Manchester Liberal Democrats are calling for Pep Guardiola to be awarded Freedom of the City following Manchester City’s historic Champions League win on Saturday night.

Liberal Democrat Councillor Chris Northwood, who represents the area which includes City’s home ground at the Etihad Stadium said: “Winning the treble is a moment to be celebrated, and Pep Guardiola’s record over the years at Manchester City deserves formal recognition. Manchester City’s investment in our local community goes beyond football and deserves to be celebrated.“ She added, “With the only other English club to have achieved this being Manchester United, our city should be incredibly proud of our football heritage. No matter your team’s allegiance, or none, this is a moment all football fans across the city recognise as a great moment”.

Leader of the Manchester Liberal Democrats John Leech added: “From the days of Maine Road I’ve been a lifelong City fan. What Pep has done for City is incredible, he’s built a team of great players with a world-class playing style. The results of his management have inspired young people across our city. It’s time the Council recognise him for his achievements and award him Freedom of the City”.

The Manchester Liberal Democrats will be bringing forward a motion to the council. Such a motion will need cross-party support to pass. The Manchester Liberal Democrats are calling on the ruling Labour group to back their motion and recognise Guardiola through granting him Freedom of the City.
