- DCMS only employs 14 people outside of London - despite the Government's repeated commitment to the North.
- In the North West DCMS employs just one.
- Leech: "Government is completely obsessed with London."
John Leech has criticised the Government for a lack of commitment to the North as yet more evidence of a London obsessed Government has been revealed.
The Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) employs just one person in the North West Region, according to the Secretary of State's own figures. This is despite the Government repeatedly voicing its commitment to the North.
John Leech, former DCMS spokesperson, has hit out at the numbers accusing the Government of being "completely obsessed" with London.
The Department employs more than 600 people in London but just one in the North West, North East, South East, South West and East Midlands. It employs three in the East of England and six in Yorkshire and the Humber.
But Manchester MP of ten years, John Leech, says this is nowhere near enough: "This Government claims to be decentralising this country, building a Northern Powerhouse and committing to Manchester, and yet their Department for Media employs just one person in the whole of the North West Region!
"The BBC showed commitment to the North by moving its whole operations over to Media City in Salford and yet our own Department for Culture, Media and Sport is still completely obsessed with London.
"To employ 14 people outside of London is pitiful, but to have just one in Manchester is embarrassing. Manchester is home to some of the most original and groundbreaking television, theatre and film in the country, and we are, yet again, being brushed aside. This Government really needs to catch up."
