The way FC United of Manchester is run has given all football fans food for thought. FC United were set up in the wake of Malcolm Glazer’s takeover of Manchester United by fans who had grown increasingly disillusioned with rising ticket prices, delayed kick-offs for the benefit of television and by the way that a Manchester institution had stopped being for and about the fans.
FC United’s ownership model is a demonstration of what can be achieved when clubs are run in the best interests of the fans who are after all those who care about the club the most. I applaud the community work that the club is heavily involved in, with events using football as a way of helping young people get fit and bringing different parts of the community together.
I am proud to have become a patron of the FC United Development Fund which aims to raise money for the club to enable it to further engage with disadvantaged communities across Manchester.
