DfE stats show Gov must invest in Northern schools or face dividing country for a generation

Liberal Democrats have slammed the Government for starving Northerners of education investment, as DfE stats show a stark North/South divide.

Senior Liberal Democrats across the North said the Government 'must urgently invest in the region's schools or face dividing the country for generations to come.'

Schools across the North are amongst the lowest-performing in the country, according to official statistics released by the Department for Education this morning.

Liberal Democrat Spokesperson for the North, John Leech said:

“These statistics are an immense disappointment, but they are not at all surprising.

“The North/South divide is at breaking point. Our schools are bursting at the seams because no one is paying attention to us – it can't go on like this.

"The Government must urgently invest in Northern schools or face dividing our country for generations to come. Nobody wins from that.

"Lib Dems will invest in the North like never before. We will boost early years, teen and adult education, and we will guarantee alternatives to those who choose other paths or leave education early.

"We must fix the wretched North/South divide once and for all, and only the Liberal Democrats are up to the job."
